Park Bench Shelter, 1989

Public, civic performatvie sculpture, New Haven, CT

This shelter was a collaboration that began on September 10th when Jackie Jones, a homeless woman, expressed the unrealistic yet genuine wish that the city build awnings over its park benches. After several stages in the collaborative design process, the Park Bench Shelter was completed on September 30th. On November 7th, the New Haven Parks and Recreation Department removed the sculpture/shelter when they began renovations to the park; they moved her belongings (several grocery carts full of clothes) to a parking lot across the street.
